Beyond Shanghai Expo 2010: Working in partnerships to develop a lasting legacy

In 2010 Liverpool City Council worked with a wide range of agencies, businesses and organisations to promote the cultural and economic potential in the North West of England in the biggest ever World Expo in Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China.

During the uncertain economic climate in the UK, London withdrew from the Expo leaving Liverpool as the only UK city exhibiting at the Expo. During the six months period of the exhibition, the Liverpool Pavilion attracted more than 770,000 visitors. It successfully established Liverpool as the gateway to business development in the North West. This ambitious project also developed a successful working partnership model across public, private and voluntary sectors.

The ‘Beyond Shanghai’ event is being led by the Confucius Institute (CI ), The University of Liverpool ( UoL) and Liverpool Chinese Business Association(LCBA). The event aims to bring a wide range of businesses and organisations together to discuss how to ensure a lasting legacy of the Shanghai Expo 2010. The event will be of particular interest to those organisations who have, or who wish to develop relationships in China and with Chinese businesses.
Beyond Shanghai will seek to establish the current status of organisations projects and flag up potential beneficial partnerships/suppliers/resources. It is hoped that the event will offer a platform for organisations to share ambitions and aspirations whilst ensuring commercial confidentiality.

Beyond Shanghai will take place at the Hilton Hotel Liverpool on Wednesday 30 March 2011 starting at 10.00.am and running through the day to 4.00pm

Contributing organisations* so far include: Liverpool City Council, The Confucius Institute, University of Liverpool, UKTI, Liverpool Chinese Business Association, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and Mitchell Charlseworth Accountants.
